Why this matters for engineers (it, civil, mechanical)

The income tax return (itr) filing angle for Engineers (IT, Civil, Mechanical)

Engineers form India's largest professional cohort — ~6 million practising. Most are salaried with Form-16, but a growing share freelance, contract or consult on the side (subject to TDS u/s 194JA, GST above ₹20 lakh, presumptive option under 44ADA). FilingLab handles end-to-end engineer tax — multi-source ITR, salary + freelance reconciliation, Section 80C / 80CCD optimisation, foreign-employer salary (deputation), and ESPP / RSU capital gains.

Engineers (IT, Civil, Mechanical) — frequently asked

I am salaried + freelance — which ITR do I use?

ITR-3 (full books) or ITR-4 (presumptive 44ADA). Most engineers use ITR-4 with 44ADA — declare 50% of freelance receipts as profit, salary income separately.

GST on freelance engineering services?

Mandatory above ₹20 lakh annual receipts. Below that, voluntary. Note: services to foreign clients are zero-rated exports — no GST charged but ITC refundable.

How are RSU / ESPP shares taxed?

Vesting: perquisite at FMV (added to salary, taxed at slab). Sale: capital gains (LTCG > 12 months @ 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh; STCG ≤ 12 months @ 20%). Foreign-listed shares: same but with FX rate.
