Every business that manufactures, processes, stores, distributes, or sells food in India must obtain an FSSAI license from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. FSSAI license is issued at three levels based on turnover: Basic (up to ₹12L), State (₹12L–₹20 Cr), and Central (above ₹20 Cr or specified sectors like import/export, railways, airports).
Operating without FSSAI license is a punishable offense — fine up to ₹5 lakh and imprisonment up to 6 months. FSSAI number (14-digit) must be printed on all food labels and invoices.
